One-Straight-Cut Activities

The One-Straight-Cut activities are split in two sections. The One-Straight-Cut symmetry focuses on creating different shapes and letters, which allows students to identify the type of symmetry regarding each final product. The One-Straight-Cut-Heart activities emphasize on concepts and reasoning of ratios, shape identities, and geometric constrictons.

These activities have students explore the ideas of symmetry through folding-and-cutting paper techniques. The best way so far to implement these activities is by folding an 8 by 8 grid and drawing the letter on the grid. Instead of giving the students instructions, we had students fold the paper themselves with the goal of getting all the lines to overlap. The worksheets and PowerPoints are to the right, and please contact us if you have questions.

One-Straight-Cut LOVE MATH

These activities are similar to the LOVE MATH one-straight-cut letter activities. However, students are to figure out how to make a singular heart, two-connected heart, and four-connected heart with one complete cut. Students need to utilize critical thinking, and the ideas of symmetry learned in the LOVE MATH activity to figure out how to fold each variation of one-cut hearts.
