Operation Square

Instructions

When we implemented this activity in 6th, 7th and 8th grade classrooms, we had enough time and personnel to prepare operation squares before using this activity. We found it easier to fold and cut all the operations squares needed for our classes. We know our situation was ideal, so below are instructions to fold and cut the operation squares using an origami paper.

Instruction Slides

Activity #1: Addition and Subtraction

The first operation square has students practice addition and subtraction with integers. Students write down the problems created by folding the operation square and solve each problem. Students will also participate in a word problem to reinforce the ideas of adding and subtracting integers in more complex situations. Lastly, students will trade papers and check each other work from their operations square.

Activity #2: Order of Operations

The second activity has students practice order of operations. We have students use addition, subtraction, and multiplication signs. We excluded division signs due to some scenarios where division was complicated or not possible. Similar to the previous activity, students solve a word problem involving order of operations, and check another peer’s work.

Activity #3: Fraction Operations

The third activity uses the operation square with fraction operations. Students create their own fractions using the operation square to add, subtract, multiply, and divide fractions. Similar to the previous two activities, students  solve a word problem involving fraction operations and check another peer's work. The PowerPoint describes how you can use the operation square to make fractions with an example.
